Dog Language

How do dogs talk to us?
Dogs can't talk like we can but they can tell us how they are feeling with their bodies. They can tell us that they are happy, frightened, scared or angry by the way that they look. It is important that we look at the whole dog and not just one thing. Remember that we would never go near a dog unless it is on a leash, with its owner and we would always ask first.

How does a dog show us that it is feeling happy and relaxed?
When a dog is showing us that it is happy it could:

  • Wag its tail from side to side
  • Hold its head up high
  • Have its tongue hanging out
  • Want to play

How does a dog show us that it is scared or nervous?
When a dog is showing us that it is scared or nervous it could:

  • Drop its tail between its legs
  • Wag its tail low to the ground
  • Have its ears back or flat on its head
  • Look like its eyes are slightly closed
  • Look like it is trying to lick something
  • Try to look smaller by crouching down
  • Roll over and show you its tummy

How does a dog show us that it is angry or wanting to fight?

When a dog is showing us that it is angry or wanting to fight it could:

  • Wave its tail slowly from side to side and keep it straight
  • Have its tail raised over its back
  • Have its eyes wide open and staring
  • Show you its teeth and be growling
  • Have its ears raised high in the air
  • Make itself look as big as it can
  • Have the hair on the top of its back and neck standing up
  • Stand on the tips of its paws
