Do
Nots For Dogs
Do
not go into a backyard without permission
Dogs will protect their property. They may belong
to a friend or neighbor and you may have met them but if their owners
are not there they may see you as a threat.

Do
not climb up on a fence to see a dog
Dogs might think that you are attacking their property
and get angry. You might fall or the dog might jump up and grab or bite
you.

Do
not tease a dog
When we are teased we can feel angry and sometimes
lash out at the people doing it. Dogs cannot tell us to stop and that
they want to be left alone. Their only way of stopping it is to move away
or get angry.

Do
not stare at a dog
Dogs think that you are threatening them when you
stare.

Do
not corner a dog
If they are feeling scared they would like to run
away. If you corner them they may try and fight to get away.

Do
not leave a dog in the car on its own
Cars get very hot very quickly and a dog may die
if it is left in it. They may also bark, growl or jump at the windows
when people walk past the car.

Do
not go near a dog when it is sleeping
It may wake with a fright and try and defend itself.

Do
not go near a dog when it is eating
It may try and protect its food.

Do
not go near a dog if it is with its puppies
Mothers are very protective of their puppies and
will defend them. Do not go near them unless the owner is with you.

Do
not go near a dog when it is tied up
It may feel unsafe and scared because it can't get
away.

Do
not go near a dog at a party
Loud noises and lots of people in its yard might
may frighten the dog. If you are having a party it is a good idea to put
your pets somewhere safe and away from your friends.

Do
not pat a dog on the head
We don't like being patted on the head. Dogs don't
either. It may hurt them.
