What
Happens?
They
are returned to their families
We all like happy endings and hopefully more and more of our lost pets will end up back where they belong with their families. The law says that you must register your dogs and cats with the local council. All dogs and cats being registered for the first time must now be microchipped. Registration and microchipping is really important if we want our pets returned.

They
find or are given a new home
In most cases the pets have found their way to the
Council pound or an animal welfare shelter. If the Council cannot find
the pet's owners, they may allow other families to take them home for
a small fee.

They may be put to sleep
The pound and animal welfare shelters try to find
the lost pet's family or find them a new family. If they cannot find their
home or a new family after eight days they may put the pet to sleep. This
is very sad and a very good reason why we all need to learn how to be
responsible pet owners. The best way to make sure that this never happens
to your pet is to make sure it is registered. It is also a good idea to
have your pet microchipped by a Vet as this may also help in having your
pet returned.
