New Mini Units

Background
This is a new educational site which is designed to support the State Government Responsible Pet Ownership Program for Schools. A Teachers Kit was distributed free of charge to all Victorian Primary Schools late in the 2000 school year. This comprehensive document consists of integrated units of work, based around the Curriculum Standards Framework II, an extensive teacher reference and resource section, a video and big book.

The second major component is the School Visitation Program. Each primary school in Victoria is entitled to a free annual visit from a trained Pet Educator and their temperament-tested pet. Over 1000 primary schools have been visited by one of our team of 65 educators. They educate the children on issues such as choosing an appropriate pet for the family, pet health and welfare and the importance of registration. Particular attention is also given to recognizing the warning signs given by dogs, the correct way to approach a dog and what to do if approached by an aggressive dog.

The program has been developed, and is sponsored by the Department of Primary Industries, funded through $1 from every dog and cat registration, and is therefore free to all primary schools. The Teachers Section of this site is designed to help teachers implement this initiative into their classrooms.

Features of the site

Junior and Senior Pathways
This site has been designed to cater for all ranges within the primary school. A junior primary and senior primary path have been developed in order to allow the students to access information and concepts appropriate to their language development. The structure of the site is the same for both paths; the relevant pages are linked so those students, who require a simpler explanation or a more detailed one, can easily access them. We envisage the site being a great resource for teachers in further developing a literacy focus while teaching the unit.

Pet Club
Victor and Victoria's Pet Club has been designed to provide the children with the opportunity to interact with the program.

Secret Membership Test
The aim of this component is to encourage the children to explore the site. The test is self-correcting and will link the children to the appropriate page to find the information if they require it.

Ask an Expert
There are opportunities for the children to ask questions of Vets and Animal Control Officers. The pages are changed monthly.

Members of the Month
We will be inviting children to fill out a form, which they will be able to download and return it to us by email. There is an opportunity for a picture of the child to be provided electronically.

Great Work!
This section is devised to allow the children to share work that they have completed on responsible pet ownership on the site. We would prefer that the children supply this electronically however it can be posted to:
