Handling Cats

Cats need to be handled from the time they are very young so that they recognize it as an enjoyable experience. The more they are lovingly handled as kittens, the greater the chance your cat will be affectionate and responsive to you as it grows older.

If this initial period of handling is not seen as pleasurable due to rough play or incorrectly picking up the kitten there is a strong chance that your cat will not enjoy being handled as it grows.

The best way to pick up a kitten is to put one hand underneath its chest and the other supporting its lower back and back legs.

The cat must feel safe and therefore needs to be reassured and comforted. The more comfortable the cat feels the happier it will be to stay in your arms.
