Title: What Happens?

What Happens to Lost Pets?

They are returned to their families (Reclaimed)
We all like happy endings and hopefully more and more of our lost pets will end up back where they belong with their families. The law says that you must register your dogs and cats with the local council. All dogs and cats being registered for the first time must now be microchipped. Registration and microchipping is really important if we want our pets returned.

They find or are given a new home (Rehoused)
In most cases the pets have found their way to the council pound or an animal welfare shelter. If the Council cannot find the pet's owners they may allow other families to purchase the pets for a small fee.

They may be euthanased
The pound and animal welfare shelters try to find the lost pet's family or find them a new family. If they cannot find their home or a new family after eight days they may euthanase the pet. This is very sad and a very good reason why we all need to learn how to be responsible pet owners. The best way to make sure that this never happens to your pet is to make sure it is registered and wearing its registration tag. Having your pet microchipped is also a good idea, which can help in its safe return.
